International Appeal Against India-Japan Nuclear Agreement

Petitioning Prime Minister of Japan Mr. Shinzo Abe

New York City, NY – December 8, 2015  The Coalition Against Nukes and On Behalf of Planet Earth, along with the U.S. anti-nuclear community are standing in solidarity with our counterparts in India and Japan that have launched an international appeal demanding the halt of an impending nuclear deal between the governments of Japan and India set to be signed between the 11th and 13th of December during the Japanese prime minister’s visit to India.

“With the, yet uncontained, radioactive nightmare ongoing at Fukushima continuing to contaminate the Pacific Ocean, Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe’s push to sell nuclear technology to the fragile and unstable country of India is profit and greed driven madness,” said Priscilla Star, founder of the Coalition Against Nukes.

Sheila Parks, Ed.D., Founder of On Behalf of Planet Earth, wonders how anyone could possibly trust Shinzo Abe, and quoted Dr. Helen Caldicott, “Contamination was and is widespread in vegetables, fruit, meat, milk, rice and tea in many areas of Japan. The Fukushima disaster is not over and will never end. The radioactive fallout which remains toxic for hundreds to thousands of years covers large swathes of Japan will never be ‘cleaned up’ and will contaminate food, humans and animals virtually forever.”

The International appeal was launched by India based Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and peace (CNDP) and includes a petition on that can be found here

Even as renewable and sustainable energy sources are becoming more efficient and cheaper year after year, the global nuclear industry is using countries like India to compensate for their losses. India has become a playground for multinational vendors like Areva, GE, Westinghouse, Atomsroyexport, Hitachi, Toshiba and Mitsubishi despite the non-violent and long-standing protests launched by communities near proposed nuclear reactors as a result of the serious threats to their lives and livelihoods. By attempting to sell nuclear reactors to India, Japan will be undermining the democratic right of people to shape their immediate environment and a future for themselves and their descendants.

The deal also has dangerous implications for global nuclear disarmament. It effectively legitimises India’s nuclear weapons and shreds the international norms disallowing nuclear commerce to countries that do not follow global non-proliferation expectations. This is particularly egregious in the 70th anniversary of the wholesale destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Coalition Against Nukes, or C.A.N., was created after the 3/11/11 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdowns in Japan causing huge amounts of radiation to contaminate Japan and continually spread radioactive plumes across the world. To join us, visit us online
